Where does the Holy Spirit go when we all wake up?

Q. I’m struggling with the question of the reality of the Holy Spirit. For instance, where does the Holy Spirit go when we all wake up? Is the Holy Spirit just part of the dream, or is He eternal, and so still around when the dream is over?

A. The Course directly addresses the question of what happens to the Holy Spirit when we all wake up:

When the Atonement is complete and the whole Sonship is healed there will be no Call to return. But what God creates is eternal. The Holy Spirit will remain with the Sons of God, to bless their creations and keep them in the light of joy. (T-5.I.5:5-7)

Notice the reason why the Holy Spirit will remain with us after the separation is over: “what God creates is eternal.” The Course makes clear in many passages (I’ve collected 18) that the Holy Spirit is a creation of God.

“Creation” is an extremely important term in the Course, one that it does not use lightly. It refers to God’s ability to extend Himself and bring into being minds that share His nature and His attributes, are one with Him and even part of Him. These minds are real. They have their own identity, their own awareness, and their own will (giving them the ability to potentially choose against God). And they are eternal. God’s creative act is what brought us into being. And God’s creative act is what brought the Holy Spirit into being.

That the Holy Spirit is an actual creation of God’s, I believe, is an untold blessing for us. It means that He is a genuine, living Mind. He is aware. He thinks and wills. Most importantly, He loves and cares. He has all the capacities that we do, only in infinitely greater measure.

This means that in receiving guidance and help from the Holy Spirit, we are in an actual relationship with Someone who is real, Someone Who sincerely desires our happiness, Someone Who wants to help us. Isn’t that far better than the alternative—receiving help from something impersonal, something that cannot actually love us, something that, when the need for help is gone, will itself vanish into thin air?

If what we want is the help of a genuine “Someone,” then we are in luck, for that is exactly what the Course consistently teaches that the Holy Spirit is.
