  • I Follow in the Way Appointed Me by Greg Mackie. Lesson 317 is a powerful and beautiful lesson. It says that each of us has a specific part to play in God's plan for salvation, and completing that part is essential for the world's salvation and our own. In this article, Greg shares his personal reflections on this lesson and invites you to explore its implications for your life as well.
  • What in God's Name Is God's Name? by Greg Mackie. In this article, Greg presents a Course-based answer to the question "What is God's Name?" Along the way, he discusses the significance of names and naming in human culture, and explores the Course's own view of this topic. Above all, he focuses on the transformative power the Course places on the process of replacing our names for the "nameless" with the one Name of God that all of us share. Fully embracing the Name of God leads to nothing less than the full restoration of the glorious inheritance that God our Father bestowed upon us as His holy Sons.
  • Commentary on the Introduction to the Workbook by Robert Perry. Doing the Workbook, therefore, is absolutely crucial. Without it, we will have theory, we will have teachings. But we won't have the mind training that allows those teachings to come alive for us.
  • Commentary on Lesson 1: Nothing I see...means anything. by Robert Perry. This lesson seems like a downer. But its meaning is central to the Course. The Course wants to slowly drain the meaning out of the things we see. This will ultimately liberate us from the painful meanings we see around us, and it will open us up to the joyful meanings that lie beyond physical form.
  • Commentary on Lesson 2: I have given everything I see...all the meaning that it has for me. by Robert Perry. Today's idea explains that the meaning these things have for us is not in them, but has been assigned by us to them. We see it in them, but it's not in them. The meaning we see is therefore inappropriate, inapplicable. We have given meaning to things that have no meaning.
  • Commentary on Lesson 8: My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts. by Robert Perry. You don't really see anything. You see only your own thoughts, projected outward. If your thoughts are obsessed with the past, then, that's all you'll see.
  • Commentary on Lesson 9: I see nothing as it is now. by Robert Perry. It's disturbing to think that the entire reality we see is not there. It's so disturbing that the idea might meet with active resistance—not just passive.
  • Commentary on Lesson 15: My thoughts are images that I have made. by Robert Perry. Our internal thoughts ultimately show up as external images. Therefore, when the light of vision truly starts entering our thoughts, it will also show up as part of the images we see. We will start to see light around the objects we see now, but that light will be our thoughts of light showing up in image-form.
  • Commentary on Lesson 16: I have no neutral thoughts. by Robert Perry. We do have the belief that at least some thoughts have no effect, right? The truth is the opposite: the effect they have is everything we see, and everything we feel. Thus, the phrase "idle thoughts" is an oxymoron. To speak of a thought that produces no result is to fall into a contradiction in terms.
  • Commentary on Lesson 22: What I see is a form of vengeance. by Robert Perry. We see the world wanting to get vengeance on us for putting our anger on it. We see the world wanting to get us back for what we did to it (project our anger onto it). So now we see a world that is poised to attack in return.

  • How Jesus Helps by Allen Watson. How Jesus, in A Course in Miracles, offers to help us yet a little more if we accept his presence in our lives.
  • The Role of the Healer in ACIM by Robert Perry. The Manual for Teachers describes the role of "healer of patients," a person who goes to people in need of healing and extends spiritual healing to them. In this article, Robert presents a brief summary of the Manual's portrayal of healers and their function.
  • What is the Manual for Teachers? by Robert Perry. A Course in Miracles has three distinct volumes. The Text is for studying the thought system. The Workbook is for doing the lessons. The Manual is for… what? Is it just a summary of Course principles in question-and-answer format, or is it something more?
  • His Recognition of Us by Robert Perry. Our world has seen in Jesus, perhaps more than in any other, a sublime beauty, a perfection, a ray of light, a source of hope. This article by Robert Perry, published in an earlier edition of A Better Way, is based on a passage in the Course in which Jesus says that he sees in us all those things we have seen in him.
  • God Is Love and Life Is Eternal: Applying Section 27 of the Manual to the Asian Tsunami Disaster by Greg Mackie. The death and destruction spawned by the earthquake and tsunami in Asia has shocked and saddened the entire world. For those with religious inclinations, it has once again brought up an age-old question: How can we reconcile such tragic death and destruction with a loving Creator? Section 27 of the Manual ("What Is Death?") offers a radical and liberating answer: We can’t, and we shouldn’t try. This is truly joyous news, for if death and destruction are not of God (and are not even real), then we need not be afraid of Him and can trust Him completely. God is only Love, and life is eternal.
  • Ten Character Traits of the Spiritually Advanced by Robert Perry. Answers the question: What kind of person are we trying to become on this path? An exposition of the ten characteristics of God's teachers from the Manual. Taken from the final chapter of Robert's book Path of Light: Stepping into Peace with A Course in Miracles.

Photo of Allen Welcome! My passion over the years has been writing commentary on various sections in the Course, especially Workbook lessons and Text sections. This grew out of my days of Bible teaching. I found that if I could share what I gained from a certaian Course passage, others could share in whatever clarity and enthusiasm I experienced. Even though I have retired from the Circle, I can still be reached at allen@circleofa.org. I currently lead support and study groups at the Unity Church of Portland. Please phone the church office for more information: 503-234-7411.

This article attempts to tease out the ladder's overall structure and present it in simple terms.
