Call on God 24/7 for the rest of your life

August 14, 2006

Our Workbook class started Part II of the Workbook this week. I have always loved Part II. The basic practice it has us do for the entire rest of the year is to call on God (using the beautiful prayer that comes with each day's lesson), quiet our minds, and wait for Him to reveal Himself to us in answer to our call. The introduction to Part II reminds us of this practice and this goal again and again:

For we wait in quiet expectation for our God and Father….We have come far along the road, and now we wait for Him. (2:2, 5)
We say some simple words of welcome [the prayers], and expect our Father to reveal Himself, as He has promised. We have called on Him, and He has promised that His Son will not remain unanswered when he calls His Name. (3:3-4)
We say the words of invitation that His Voice suggests [the prayers], and then we wait for Him to come to us. (4:6)
Sit silently and wait upon your Father. (5:5)
And now we wait in silence, unafraid and certain of Your coming. (7:1)

As we approached the beginning of Part II a few days ago, a thought occurred to me: Since I am to devote the entire rest of the year to practices in which I call on God and wait silently for Him to come to me, why not set the goal of calling on Him (and waiting for His answer) all the time-twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week? Needless to say, there will be times when I forget to do this, but so what? All I need to do when that happens is start up again. After all, the Course promises that "in time, with practice, you will never cease to think of Him"(W-pI.153.18:1). Why not shoot for that right now?

With these thoughts in mind, I decided to set that goal. I wrote the following words on a piece of paper that I inserted in my Course book: "Call on God 24/7 for the rest of your life." I've been working with this for the past few days, and it has been great so far. Sure, there have been many periods when I've forgotten, but I think that having the goal of calling on God all the time has enabled me to do so far more than if I had set a more modest goal. And the rewards of doing so have been noticeable. My overall state of mind has been more peaceful and loving. Life has flowed more smoothly. While I can't report any "blow out" spiritual experiences so far, I do have a stronger sense of connection with God than I did before. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this works over the long haul.
