How I Found the Course

by Pari Hakimi

I come from an Islamic land and a religious family. I had no idea about the whole subject of "spirituality" until 3 years ago when my family and I moved to the U.S.A. At that time, I started reading all sorts of books around this subject. Somehow, through all this, I gradually felt an intense sense of closeness to Jesus. The love I felt for him got deeper and deeper. His pictures and statues are decorating my home and office. This love and relationship to him is far beyond my understanding.

One night a year ago I had a dream. I was standing in front of Jesus. He was sitting on the ground in a nice place, and he was meditating. I asked him, "My Lord, which path should I take?" He looked in my eyes and pointed at few people nearby and said, "Wait!" The people were standing in front of a path, talking. I had the feeling Jesus was waiting for them to leave so that we could start walking together, unhindered. The people left the place and then Jesus and I started walking together down the path. I was very happy and Jesus was smiling all the time. The path seemed to me very smooth and easy! All the next day I thought about my dream. I thought that maybe it could be a confirmation from him for my plans to go back to my own job as pharmacist and I had to start again with my study.

After a couple of weeks when I finished one of my many books about Jesus and his life, I went to my bookshelf to pick a new book. I decided for a book which I had for 2 years on my shelf but never wanted to start. It looked so hard to read and it was not about my beloved Jesus. But my heart won over my logic and I started reading it! It was A Course in Miracles.

I read the first few pages about how the book is written and I did few lessons from the Workbook. After about 3 weeks I started with the Text. I could not understand what he was talking about and my English is not very good too! But I felt I couldn't put the book down. It was becoming my life. I could not think about anything else. Jesus came alive through those lines in book. I finally realized that my dream where I asked Jesus what my path was, and then walked with him down a smooth and easy path, was about A Course in Miracles.

Since a year ago when I picked up the book, my life has totally changed. I sink every day in every free minute into the book or I read in a book from Robert Perry. I do the lessons. I cannot really concentrate on anything else. I have to push myself not to forget or postpone important things. Everything else in my life has taken second place. I can't imagine a life without my Course. I don't read the book, I breath it into my soul. Maybe I am not a good student because I haven't had any holy instants and I fall asleep during the meditation and so on. But about one thing I'm sure with my whole being: If it takes me only this life time or another millions of years, I KNOW I'm on the right path holding my Lord's hand and going back Home.
